‎Sydney Sweeney on Cassie, 'Euphoria' Finale, and Why She May Never Feel 'Satisfied' With Her Character’s Ending

‎Sydney Sweeney says Cassie Howard’s story in Euphoria has officially ended, but her connection to the character remains far from over.
‎Speaking about the final season, Sweeney—who earned an Emmy nomination for Season 2—explained that returning to Cassie for Season 3 felt like stepping back into a familiar but constantly shifting world. Across the series, Cassie evolved from an insecure teenager into a young woman facing marriage, financial collapse, and controversial choices, including working as an OnlyFans model to survive.
Sydney Sweeney discusses Cassie’s Euphoria ending, sexualization, Rue’s death, and her evolving acting career.

‎Despite the character’s conclusion, Sweeney admitted she still wonders what else Cassie could have become.
‎Cassie has been a defining role for Sweeney since the show’s 2019 debut. Her performance has been widely praised, with Variety calling it one of the strongest TV performances of the century so far. The role also intensified ongoing public conversation around her portrayal and the show’s sexual themes.
‎Sweeney reflected on her growth between seasons, noting that working on films and producing projects helped her return to Cassie with more confidence and creative input.
‎When asked about the character’s surreal “50-foot woman” sequence, she described it as both symbolic and expressive.
‎“I thought that it was wild and fun. There’s this aspect of Cassie that feels otherworldly, where she makes grand gestures — you watch a trainwreck, but it’s this beautifully hilarious, emotional trainwreck, and everybody’s along for the ride.”
‎She added that the moment represented Cassie’s desire for attention and love, even at destructive cost.
‎“I think that, unfortunately, she doesn’t know what love is. I think that she had a bad example with her dad…”
‎Sweeney explained that Cassie’s troubled relationships shaped her understanding of affection, leading her into unhealthy patterns—especially in her relationship with Nate.
‎“I think she loved Nate in her own way… She was so deep into it, she didn’t know how to get out.”
‎Discussing Cassie and Nate’s wedding, she described it as emotionally layered and tragic beneath its surface happiness.
‎“You have this juxtaposition where she’s supposed to be happy… and she loses it.”
‎However, she also noted a softer truth about their relationship:
‎“I do think Cassie and Nate were really good friends.”
‎On Cassie’s complicated dynamic with Maddy (Alexa Demie), Sweeney expressed appreciation for their eventual reconciliation.
‎“Of course! Because Cassie needs her Maddy and Maddy needs her Cassie.”
‎One major moment the cast experienced separately was Rue’s fate. Sweeney revealed she learned about it alongside viewers.
‎“We all knew that Rue was going to get killed off… I was crying.”
‎Reflecting on being typecast and sexualized due to Cassie’s role, Sweeney acknowledged the tension between on-screen storytelling and real-life perception.
‎“There’s no awareness that [Cassie’s peers] sexualize Cassie on the show, but we’re going to do this in real life too.”
‎She also said she hopes time will bring more balanced interpretation of the series:
‎“Huh, maybe we all had this very wrong.”
‎When asked about Cassie’s ending, Sweeney admitted she may never feel fully satisfied.
‎“I don’t think I’ll ever be satisfied with where Cassie ended up…”
‎Still, she emphasized that the character will remain with her creatively.
