Prime Video Releases First Teaser for 'The Love Hypothesis' Starring Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman
Prime Video has officially released the first teaser trailer for its upcoming adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel The Love Hypothesis.

Stars Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman introduced the first footage during Prime Video’s inaugural Obsessed Fest on Saturday. The immersive fan event took place at nya Studios in Los Angeles and showcased several of the streamer’s young adult originals.

Directed by Claire Scanlon, The Love Hypothesis centers on Olive, played by Reinhart, described as “a brilliant Ph.D. candidate focused on her future in academia. But when she realizes her best friend Ahn (Rachel Marsh) has fallen for her crush Jeremy (Nicholas Duvernay), Olive impulsively kisses intimidating professor Adam Carlsen (Bateman) to prove she’s moved on.”
That impulsive decision leads to an unexpected arrangement. According to the film’s synopsis, “what begins as a desperate act of friendship spirals into a fake relationship with rules, boundaries, and a mutually beneficial agreement.” As the relationship develops, Olive is forced to “test her most daunting hypothesis yet: that love might actually be worth the risk.”
The teaser recreates a memorable moment from the novel, showing Olive unexpectedly kissing Adam while her friend Ahn watches nearby, mirroring the book cover. The pair then agree to maintain a fake relationship while knowing their colleagues are closely observing them.
“I should kiss you,” Bateman’s Adam tells Olive at one point. “Your friends, they’re watching from the balcony.”
Science also plays a central role in the teaser. The footage features narration resembling an educational video about molecular bonds, reinforcing the film’s STEM-focused romance.
“Molecules stay in motion, vibrating and colliding until they find a match. And when they do, something miraculous happens. They form a bond. Isn’t science fun?” the narrator can be overheard saying in the trailer.
During a livestreamed discussion at Obsessed Fest on Prime Video’s TikTok, Reinhart and Bateman discussed their chemistry read, their characters, and adapting the beloved novel for the screen. The pair also joked about the teaser leaking online before its official release, encouraging fans to act as though they had not already watched it.
Bateman revealed that Hazelwood’s novel remained “around set” and was “always front and center” throughout filming as the cast and crew worked to preserve the spirit of the original story.
“We all want to see a lot more love than hate and this is that. I think it’s beautiful and hopefully feels timeless and feels like a movie you can go back and watch with your friends and swoon over,” Reinhart said of the film.
Bateman added: “I’m really really proud of what everyone did. I tink it’s a really beautiful film.”
Sarah Rothschild wrote the screenplay, while Elizabeth Cantillon serves as producer. The Amazon MGM feature also stars Jaboukie Young-White and Arty Froushan.
