Teyana Taylor has confirmed she will undergo emergency vocal cord surgery after doctors discovered a noncancerous growth that has impacted her ability to speak and perform. The multifaceted artist made the announcement on August 6 via her Instagram Story, directly addressing fans and clarifying the future of her anticipated album Escape Room.

Concerns surrounding Taylor’s health were addressed with candor, as she revealed that vocal discomfort had been a lingering issue. After undergoing numerous medical consultations, she was informed that immediate surgical intervention was necessary to remove the growth affecting one of her vocal cords.
Taylor, 34, expressed both disappointment and resilience in her message. “That honestly breaks my heart. I don’t take lightly what it means to show up for y’all,” she wrote. Her message underlined a deep emotional connection to her fanbase, emphasizing that she had invested her entire spirit into her upcoming work.
Escape Room remains on track for its scheduled release date of August 22. The album is described by Taylor as her most personal project to date, featuring 22 tracks and appearances from Issa Rae and Lala Anthony. The rollout includes previously released singles “Bed of Roses” and “Long Time,” providing listeners with a taste of what promises to be her most introspective and cinematic body of work yet.
Taylor described the timing of the surgery as symbolic, drawing parallels between her real-life health battle and the concept behind Escape Room. She called her situation “an unexpected escape room,” acknowledging the unforeseen challenges she must now navigate with rest, patience, and faith.
Known professionally as both a singer and actress, Taylor has consistently merged her talents under her directorial alter ego “Spike Tee.” Her previous album, The Album (2020), was both a critical and commercial success, debuting at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 and No. 6 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
Upcoming commitments have been impacted, including a podcast appearance with former First Lady Michelle Obama, which has been postponed. Taylor, however, reassured fans that her return will be marked by renewed energy, a stronger voice, and deeper purpose.
Outside of music, Taylor is set to appear in the star-studded film One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. The project, which co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn, is expected to debut later in 2025.
