‎Andrew Ferguson penned the screenplay for Subversion, which has been described as a “Die Hard on a submarine” style thriller. The plot centers on a once-promising naval commander, portrayed by Hemsworth, who becomes ensnared in a dangerous game after being blackmailed by a cartel-like organization. Tasked with piloting a submarine laden with illegal cargo through international waters, the commander faces relentless threats both inside the vessel and from external forces.
‎The tension escalates as the naval officer is pursued by a determined Coast Guard officer, played by James. Their high-stakes cat-and-mouse chase unfolds amid the claustrophobic confines of the submarine and the perilous expanse of the ocean, promising a gripping narrative rich with suspense and action.
‎Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing Subversion, with Stephen Shafer and Greg Cohen serving as executive producers under the di Bonaventura Pictures banner. The film joins a slate of high-profile projects currently drawing attention to Australia as a prime filming location for major productions.
‎James brings a dynamic presence to Subversion, building on a diverse and acclaimed career. She recently starred opposite Riz Ahmed in David Mackenzie’s thriller Relay, which premiered at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival and is slated for U.S. theatrical release on August 22. Her upcoming drama Swiped, inspired by Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, will debut at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, a project she also produced through her company Parodos Pictures.
‎The British actress is presently in production on Harmonia, a psychological drama directed by Guy Nattiv. She also recently completed filming Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo, directed by Takashi Miike and distributed by Neon. James’s critically lauded portrayal of Pamela Anderson in Hulu’s Pam & Tommy earned her nominations from the Emmy, Golden Globe, and Critics Choice awards, underscoring her rising prominence in the industry.
‎Representation for Lily James includes UTA and Sloane Weber in the United States and Tavistock Wood in the United Kingdom.
