David Corenswet says Henry Cavill and Tyler Hoechlin refused to offer Superman tips: 'Superman's not so much for giving advice'
David Corenswet, the new face of Superman in James Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman film, has officially stepped into the boots of one of the most iconic superheroes in cinematic history. As he prepares to lead a new era for DC Studios, Corenswet has revealed a surprising detail about his journey into the role.

Speaking on the red carpet at the London premiere of Superman, Corenswet disclosed that he reached out to former Supermen Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) and Tyler Hoechlin (Superman & Lois) in hopes of receiving guidance. However, both actors offered words of encouragement without delving into specific advice on how to play the Man of Steel.
“Both of them, interestingly, sort of said in their own words, ‘I’m not gonna try and give you any tips,’” Corenswet said in an interview with Heart. “And I think that’s a very Superman thing. Superman’s not so much for giving advice or dictating how other people should be.”
The response, Corenswet noted, wasn’t dismissive but rather empowering. Both Cavill and Hoechlin emphasized having fun with the role and trusting his own instincts. This supportive yet hands-off approach appears to have reinforced the responsibility and freedom that comes with portraying Superman.
“They really just conveyed to me an encouragement and a sense of ‘have fun with it,’ which I think is Superman’s way of doing it too,” Corenswet added. “They were very encouraging and we had a lovely experience. I’m excited to meet them one day. It’ll be great when we can all get in a room together.”
Joining Corenswet in the film, which hits theaters on July 11, is Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl. Under the direction of James Gunn, Superman is positioned as a major turning point for the DC Universe.
Excitement around DC’s future continues to build, especially after Gunn hinted at a new Wonder Woman film already in development. While no casting has been confirmed, Gunn acknowledged that Hit Man star Adria Arjona is among his top choices. “She’d be a great Wonder Woman, by the way,” Gunn noted, further fueling speculation.
