Christopher Nolan's epic 'The Odyssey' teaser trailer leaks online
The long-awaited first teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan’s ambitious next feature, The Odyssey, has been unveiled—though only in select theaters. Universal Pictures strategically attached the trailer to early screenings of Jurassic Park Rebirth, which began Tuesday evening, offering eager audiences a first glimpse at what’s being described as a "mythic action epic."

The release of the trailer is unusual in its secrecy. True to form, Nolan opted not to debut the footage online. Much like the rollout of his Oscar-winning Oppenheimer, the teaser for The Odyssey is being kept as a theatrical-only experience, at least for now. Nevertheless, leaked smartphone footage began circulating online almost immediately, albeit in predictably low quality—underscoring the risks of exclusive in-theater premieres in the digital age.
Though still in production, The Odyssey is already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about cinematic events of the decade. Slated for release on July 17, 2026, the film adapts Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem, following King Odysseus as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War, facing mythical creatures and divine interventions along the way.
The teaser trailer opens ominously with imagery of stormy seas and the voiceover: “Darkness. Zeus’ law smashed to pieces. I’m without a king since my master died. He knew it was an unwinnable war. And then, somehow, he won it.”
Audiences are then introduced to Tom Holland’s Telemachus in a gripping exchange with a character played by Jon Bernthal. “I have to find out what happened to my father,” says Holland, as Bernthal fires back: “Who has a story about Odysseus? You? You have a story? Some say he’s rich. Some say he’s poor. Some said he perished. Some said he’s imprisoned.”
A fleeting image then shows a man adrift on a piece of wreckage—presumably Matt Damon as Odysseus himself—hinting at the harrowing journey to come.
Rounding out the ensemble is a star-studded cast featuring Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Mia Goth. The film is being shot entirely with IMAX cameras, a first for any major motion picture of this scale, and boasts a staggering $250 million budget—making it the most expensive project of Nolan’s career to date.
Filming began in February across visually rich locations in Greece, Morocco, and Italy. While The Odyssey is still more than a year away from its premiere, its cinematic ambitions, massive production values, and iconic source material already mark it as a cultural event in the making.
For now, fans will have to experience the teaser the way Nolan intended: in theaters.
