‎Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, Squid Game revolutionized the streaming landscape when it first debuted in 2021. The show’s high-stakes survival games, searing social commentary, and unforgettable characters earned it a massive international following. But while Season 3 will continue the intense journey of Seong Gi-hun and the remaining players, it will also bring their saga to a definitive close.

‎Speaking to Korea Times, Hwang Dong-hyuk shared insight into his decision to end the main series with Season 3. “After watching Season 3, some may think there’s room for a Season 4, while others may feel there’s no need for one,” he said. While he isn’t planning another season of the flagship series, he hinted at possibilities for spin-offs within the Squid Game universe.

‎“I have considered the idea of a spin-off. There were moments during production when I grew curious myself,” Hwang added.

‎Earlier this year, at the 2025 Gotham Television Awards, Dong-hyuk told IndieWire that if a spin-off materializes, it may explore the three-year narrative gap between Seasons 1 and 2. “If I make a spin-off, it will be a story happening between Season 1 and 2,” he explained, fueling fan theories about what transpired during that period.

‎Adding to the intrigue, noted industry scooper @MyTimeToShineHello teased that the Squid Game Season 3 finale sets up an American spin-off directed by none other than David Fincher. The rumored project is expected to relocate the brutal survival games to the U.S., potentially exploring new societal critiques.
