Jason Momoa to play Lobo in 'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow'

Jason Momoa, the star of Aquaman, will continue with DC. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor will play Lobo, an extraterrestrial bounty hunter who originally debuted in comics in 1983.

Momoa was the face of the Aquaman series during the previous DC government, making a brief appearance as Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) before starring in Justice League (2017) and leading the cast in Aquaman (2018). The film was a huge success, making $1 billion and serving as the pinnacle of the DCEU films, which concluded with last year's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. That finished film was a failure, grossing only $439 million and failing to impress reviewers.

Momoa has long desired to play the character and has discussed it publicly, particularly on the press tour for The Lost Kingdom. On Monday, the actor shared a quote from the press tour in which he expressed his hope that DC will contact him regarding the part. He posted the quote on Instagram: "They called."

Several attempts have been made to bring Lobo to the big screen throughout the years. Guy Ritchie and Brad Peyton both made attempts, with Dwayne Johnson circling the role in Peyton's version. In 2018, Warner Bros. and Michael Bay toyed with the notion, but it never materialized. Emmett J. Scanlan plays Lobo in the SyFy series Krypton.

Lobo was created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen for the Omega Men #3 comic book. The blue-skinned, cigar-chomping extraterrestrial possesses superhuman strength and healing abilities, and has fought both heroes and villains.

Milly Alcock plays as the hero in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which hits cinemas on June 26, 2026. It will be the second feature in the new DC Universe, helmed by DC Studios' James Gunn and Peter Safran, after Gunn's Superman film in July.

Momoa's casting is particularly remarkable. When Gunn and Safran took over the DC brand, they left the door open for fan favorite performers from the previous administration to return, maybe in various roles. Momoa is the first to remain, although in a different position. Momoa appeared with Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, and Ray Fisher in Justice League.
