Eva Longoria says she moved her family out of 'dystopian' United States: 'I had my whole adult life here'

Eva Longoria said this week that she and her family had left the "dystopian" United States and are now splitting their time between Mexico and Spain.

"I had my whole adult life here," Longoria told Marie Claire of the United States. "But even before the epidemic, things were shifting. The mood was different. And then COVID struck, pushing it over the brink. Whether it's homelessness or taxes — not that I want to bash California — it simply feels like this chapter in my life is over."

The Desperate Housewives actress mentioned the election as one of the reasons for her conviction, which was final. "The shocking part is not that he won," she observed of Donald Trump's election triumph last week. "It's that a convicted criminal who incites hatred may hold the highest office.

"If he keeps his promises, it's going to be a scary place," she said. Longoria also spoke briefly about Trump's 2016 victory, saying, "I've never felt depressed in my life.

"It felt like, 'Does my vote actually matter? "Am I really making a difference?" she asks. "I was so disconnected from the basis of my beliefs because I honestly felt in my heart that the greatest person wins. Then it happened, and I was like, "Oh, wait. "The best person does not win."

Longoria went on to say that she considers herself "privileged" to have the option of moving elsewhere. "I get to escape and go somewhere," she remarked. "Most Americans aren't as lucky. They'll be stranded in this dystopian nation, and my concern and anguish are for them."

The actress now lives in Mexico and Spain with her husband, José Bastón, and their son, Santiago, who is six years old. She routinely travels for work in Europe and South America, but she seldom returns to Los Angeles.

Longoria also mentioned her forthcoming 50th birthday in another section of the profile. "For me, age is just a number, but I'm excited," she said. "I refuse to believe my greatest success is behind me."
